Wastewater Lagoon Expansion

Select worked with the Town of Wainwright to design and construct the Wastewater Lagoon Expansion project that provides wastewater treatment to the residents of the Town of Wainwright and Canadian Forces Base Wainwright.

This project included the expansion of the complete mix cell, conversion of the existing polishing zone to a partially mixed cell, and the expansion of the facility with a new polishing cell. Our design work included wastewater retention and first order reaction kinetics calculations proving and validating the proposed treatment capacity expansion, detailed design for site grading and the necessary process piping, working directly with Alberta Environment to receive an approval for the construction and operation of the facility, and comprehensive public consultations with Aboriginal groups. Construction was completed during the 2022 construction season and the facility has been in full operation since March 2023.

Project Challenges:

  • Had to maintain the continuous discharge of treated wastewater during construction
  • Working in proximity to a major Atco Gas pipeline, requiring construction access over the pipeline and grading up to the pipeline right of way
  • Working in proximity to an existing waterbody, Bushy Head Lake
  • Decommissioning of previously abandoned wastewater lagoon cells, complete with desludging
  • Installation of a synthetic impermeable liner, complete with a protection layer of sand

Expertise Provided

  • Preliminary Investigative Engineering
  • Wastewater Management
  • Grading

Environmental approvals were obtained to develop in close proximity to Bushy Head Lake.
